Parking at CAHR18

There are three lots available for you to park at CAHR18. Each lot costs $15 per day.

Those who arrive early **may** get a spot at the closest lot:

Option 1 – Only 200 spots at the Convention Center Lot

Use This Address: Long Beach Convention Center, 100 S Pine Ave, Long Beach, CA 90802

We do not recommend parking here as the lot will fill up quickly. For the first lucky few attendees who get a spot here, well done!

Option 2 – 1,400+ spots at the Terrace Theater Garage

Use This Address: 66 S Collins Way, Long Beach, CA 90802-4801

Parking at the Terrace Theater Garage is your best bet – plus, you’ll get to walk the brand-new elevated pedestrian Rainbow Bridge from the top of the parking lot to the Convention Center!

Once you park, take the elevator up to the Rainbow Bridge and enjoy a breezy, scenic walk. Here’s how & where to park at the Terrace Theater Garage and walk down the Rainbow Bridge. Click the first picture and use the right arrow key to continue:

Parking Option 3 – If you’re staying at the Hyatt Regency:

At Registration, you can check in by giving us your name, or bringing your printed barcode to self-scan. The Registration Area also has an Info Booth: the Info Booth is our place for Q&A, Lost & Found, and the best way to reach a staff. If you see any issues to be addressed, this is where to take them!

We’ll print your CAHR18 badge, and our helpful staff and volunteers from Kelly Services will hand you your CAHR18 bag, which includes:

  • Your Conference Guide – a printed guidebook to help you navigate #CAHR18 and contains the information you need to enter your HR recertification credits. Please keep this book safe until you log your certification! You can use it to keep track of your credits during the conference as well.
  • A mixture of important information & cool HR swag, including Bombas socks!!
  • Your Passport Card for the Marketplace Expo Passport Game

The next step as an attendee is to find out what you want to attend first, put your best self forward, and go for it! Connect with your peers on the app. Tweet or post your #CAHR18 experience on social media using hashtags #CAHR18 or #MyCAHR. Build meaningful, in-person connections with local California peers. And live your best life in Long Beach.

If you’re an Exhibitor:

Visit the Exhibitor Line at Registration to print your badge. Need to know where your booth is? View the CAHR18 Booth Map in advance! Your conference guide will be brought to you at your booth by our Deputy Executive Director & Exposition Coordinator so they can welcome you and ensure you’re all set to rock.

If you’re a Speaker:

Head straight to the Speakers Lounge to pick up your badge, check in, and prepare for your session! Check your inbox for additional details from the CAHR18 Team including parking & where the Speakers Lounge is located.

Tuesday

We love Mondays at CAHR18, but some insist Tuesdays are even better! While the schedule may look quite similar, here are some key differences…

Our Tuesday Meet to Move (sponsored by Cleo) is a kickboxing session with FitPros, so you can burn stress away and try something new if you’ve never kick-boxed. The FitPros instructors will be there to coach you!

Tuesday also features two keynote sessions: Afdhel Aziz (sponsored by Kindle) in the morning and CHRO TED-Style Talks in the afternoon. We’re also excited for our Tuesday Mega Session with the CEO of WD-40, Garry O. Ridge! He has some impressive employee engagement insights to share with us from the Main Stage.

Tuesday is also the last day of the Marketplace – your last chance to win prizes, bid on a PIHRA Foundation Silent Auction item, get your professional headshot taken, and receive professional coaching at the Career Advancement Zone. The Passport Game Prize and auction winners will be announced in the afternoon break in the marketplace.

After a full day of learning on Tuesday, get ready for a full evening of savoring, connecting, & laughing!

Meet To Eat on Tuesday Night

Wednesday

Wednesday features some killer speakers and sessions. To Certify or Not? The Value and Power of Earning Your HR Credentials

To Certify or Not? The Value and Power of Earning Your HR Credentials

Who would you trust more to rewire the electricity in your home? A licensed, bonded electrician or someone with years of experience and glowing reviews, but no credentials? This is a hot topic in the HR industry because earning your certifications isn’t required for all HR positions, but doing so can have a broad impact on the direction and trajectory of a career in Human Resources. If you’re pursuing your certifications and attending the 2018 California HR Conference, you’ll be surrounded by opportunities to prepare for your certification and earn credits toward your recertification.

For those unsure about whether or not earning an HR certification is worth it, we asked HR expert and PIHRA Leader Richard Dawson about his thoughts on the value of getting certified.

Why Richard Dawson? He’s an MBA (2018), SHRM-SCP, SPHR, PHRca, HRPM, and has 29 years of experience as a full-fledged HR Generalist/Manager with industry acumen.  He is skilled in facilitation, research, analyzing and translating complex business requirements into sophisticated HR strategies. Richard has held board of directors positions with Inland Empire SHRM to include Director of Certification, VP of Finance, President-Elect, and President, CalSHRM as Director of Certification and Communication, Vice-President of Leadership for PIHRA and National SHRM roles as Diversity & Inclusion Expertise Panel, Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Expertise Panel.

He also teaches HR Certification at five local universities in Southern California. He has been facilitating HR Certification classes since 2010. New for Richard In 2018, he has been named the new Director of HR Certification for (PIHRA) Professional in Human Resources Association, tasked with directing and teaching HR Certification. As well as the new Service Provider HR Certification Instructor for Inland Empire SHRM.  He also provides HR consulting and private tutoring on HR Certification and career / organizational development.

Check out what Richard says below about the power of HR certification, then take a look at the pre-conference certification prep-classes and all the recertification credits you can earn at CAHR18.

In your opinion, why should HR professionals become certified?

Richard Dawson: To gain valuable business acumen, HR employment, regulations, and best practices experience, as well as become a better tactical and strategic partner to stakeholders in operations.  Certification aids in enhancing professional development and incorporates creditability with employment practices.  Finally, the recertification process ensures staying updated with the ever changing laws, compliance, and human resource regulations.

Why did you earn your certification?

RD: I earned my certifications to enhance my business and human resources knowledge, as well as to be respected in the HR community by being a credible HR strategist, and to support my desire to educate others on business matters that produce successful and impactful positive outcomes for my students and organizations.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

RD: I love teaching because I enjoy educating others, and hearing how my teaching and career experiences helped others with their professional and organizational development.

If it has been awhile since someone has studied to take an exam, what advice would you give them?

RD: Do thorough research on the process.  Invest in the correct study materials.  Ask questions with the correct individual(s).  Do the work, put in quality time to read, comprehend, and utilize credible practice exam questions to test your knowledge and skills with answering multiple choice questions.

What is one thing you wish someone had told you about certification that you learned on your own?

RD: Read the material for comprehension, and do lots of practice questions.

How did you receive information on the different types of certifications offered?

RD: By joining a SHRM chapter, and taking on volunteer roles within the SHRM organization, and doing research with both HRCI and SHRM, and asking lots of questions with viable sources.

Did obtaining a certification increase your salary?

RD: Throughout my career, yes, and based on my HR Certifications, I was afforded career opportunities that completed some of my bucket list items.

7 signs your HR brand needs an update.

by Pamela J. Green, SPHR, PCC, ICC

If you’re in HR, your brand can take a real hit at times, leaving you feeling as if you have a kick me sign on your back. Your HR brand is the emotional promise of a professional experience people have as a result of interacting with you. It’s what makes your skillset desirable and directly linked to your brand’s marketability. Outdated brands often get trampled and overlooked which can lead to you feeling discounted in credibility, reputation, value and opportunity.

An outdated brand hurts your market value in the following ways:

  • Gives the impression that your knowledge and skills are no longer relevant.
  • Sends the message that you are stuck in your ways and unable or unwilling to learn new and innovative things.
  • Holds the company hostage to obsolete approaches and sets them behind the competition.
  • You offer diminishing returns often reflected in your performance reviews and your paycheck.
  • Makes you less competitive in the marketplace.

Some might believe that attending conferences and events is a way to maintain an updated brand, but in reality, if you do nothing with your conference experience you might as well have never attended in the first place. Let us help you boost your 2018 California HR Conference experience by working with a professional coach on site!

If you’re unsure if you’re walking around with a “kick me” sign or in other words, if your HR brand is outdated, see if any of these are applicable:

1. You’re seldom tapped for new projects or assignments even when they are related to your job.

This relates to more than what you know. It’s a reflection of how well you get along with others. The sand in the corporate sandbox is not for throwing; it’s for building and organizational teams need people willing to work together. If you have poor interpersonal skills and can’t get along with others, no one will care how much you know and leave your personal brand on the shelf to collect dust.

2. You’ve not attended a career enhancing development opportunity in more than a year.

Some jobs appear to need less talent development than others, but if you rely on your organization to dictate your development, you could easily wind up with an outdated brand. Your professional expiration date extends every time you take the initiative to learn something new and apply what you’ve learned. Be resourceful and look for opportunities to take responsibility for the development of your brand.

3. You have not obtained or maintained career related certifications.

HR certifications require you to obtain continuing education credits to keep that certification, which is why some organizations prefer their employees to be certified. If the organization holds its HR employees accountable for new learnings, a certified HR professional keeps the organization’s brand, needs and priorities relevant and updated.

4. Co-workers and leaders rarely come to you for insight on job-related innovation.

Personal brands that are in-the-know are repeatedly tapped for what they know, especially when it come to cutting-edge industry developments. Get in the habit of identifying the technical knowledge needed to stay current in your job while also keeping up with the absolute latest in relevant technology. Sharing these new insights labels you as an in-the-know personal brand, and someone others can rely on to expand their own understanding of industry relevant innovations.

5. You don’t know if your brand is aligned with the organization’s brand, needs or priorities.

Alignment is pivotal for growth to occur as it helps you establish a brand that can successfully adapt to organizational changes. If you are unwilling to take initiative to learn everything you can about the organization and how your personal brand can make a signification contribution, you could find your brand taking a back seat to other personal brands in the organization. The aligned personal brand knows what is needed to keep up with changing organizational priorities and increases the likelihood the organization will ensure they obtain the training and development needed to remain relevant.

6. You’ve not had a career change (including promotion or lateral moves) in more than 5 years.

A progressive career is one where you’ve been able to demonstrate promotability and usability by an organization. Those looking for growth opportunities outside need to first start internally. This show’s prospective employers that if your current employer found your talent valuable and useful enough for promotion, you must be worth their investment which, by the way, can amount to more than a 20% increase in salary.

7. Your personal appearance belongs to an age gone by.

In reality most of the world is made up of visual learners, some 65% of us in fact. We take in a lot of information visually every day. In addition we are trained by media and social interactions to care about our appearance and it is often reflected in our own personal appearance. In short, what an outdated or unkempt personal appearance says is “I don’t care what you think of how I look.” If you don’t care how you look, the organization is going to limit your exposure and opportunity to represent them more broadly and especially in important settings.

If you’re like the thousands of HR brands I get to engage every year, I’ll bet one or more of these really hits home for you. If it does, embrace the opportunity to make a shift and see what it feels like to experience a rise in the market value of your brand.

If your organization can’t or won’t invest in an upgrade in your market value, what’s holding you back from investing in yourself?

Join me at the 2018 California HR Conference, this August 26 – 29 in beautiful Long Beach, CA, to take a look at your HR brand and discover what you can do to update your professional outlook.
