Announcing CAHR20 Speaker Carol Quinn

Some of the most unfathomable HR nightmares originate not necessarily from who is hired, but how they’re hired. If you’ve ever dreamed about redesigning the hiring system at your company to better reflect organizational values, you’ll want to hear Carol Quinn speak at the 2020 California HR Conference. What do you do when you realize you’ve hired the wrong person? If you don’t have the right tool for getting the results you want, you should build your own. Carol Quinn, CAHR20 mega session presenter, did just that when she invented MBI, Motivation-Based Interviewing. As Quinn became a successful recruiter, devouring all of the relevant wisdom about hiring that the world had to offer along the way, she still had to face this question periodically. Time and time again, regardless of the best practices applied in the process, she couldn’t crack the code of perfect hiring. Quinn began to look for answers outside the realm of hiring and recruiting expertise. What she found and developed from her research changed the trajectory of her life. By attending her Monday mega session at CAHR20 in Long Beach, you’ll learn her technique that can radically align your hiring process (and candidates) with your company culture by using Motivation-Based Interviewing. To get this career-impacting insight at the best rate, be sure to register before Preview prices end on Feb 14!

[Closed] Apply to Speak at the 2020 California HR Conference

THE SUBMISSION PORTAL IS CLOSED

CAHR20 Speaker Submission portal closed on January 10, 2020.

Every year, you have a chance to submit your proposal and apply to speak (or refer an engaging speaker) for a coveted opportunity to speak at the California HR Conference, the largest HR conference on the West Coast. With over 3,100 practitioners, presenters, and providers in attendance, CAHR20 is the premier source of professional development and networking opportunities for HR professionals in California.

PIHRA welcomes presentation proposals from professionals with expertise in Human Resources and those who are committed to advancing the HR profession and willing to share best practices.

CAHR20 speaking proposals must align with one of the tracks listed below and clearly list key takeaways for attendees.

  • California Employment Law
  • HR Compliance
  • Business & HR Strategy
  • Global HR
  • Talent Management
  • Total Rewards
  • Professional Development
  • Nonprofit HR

#CAHR20 will be held from August 30-September 2, 2020 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Please note, while we do not provide stipends, honorariums or pay travel expenses for our concurrent session speakers, there are many benefits to being one of our speakers at the 2020 California HR Conference, including gaining exposure to a wide audience of HR and business decision makers. Snag the opportunity to highlight your expertise and position yourself as an expert among your peers in 2020. Apply to speak by submitting a proposal that will intrigue and enlighten the Conference Task Force.

If you haven’t attended the conference previously, to get an idea of our content offering, please view the 2019 Attendee Prospectus.

Crucial Tips To Be Selected as a California HR Conference Speaker:

  • If you have applied to speak in the past, you may be aware that all of our programs require HR re-certification credit for both SHRM and HRCI.*
  • Proposals that are eligible to receive HRCI Business, Global or California Credit will take priority over other proposals.
  • Proposals that are original in nature and have not previously been presented at another conference or PIHRA related program will take priority; we do Google you.
  • You have 1 hour for your presentation. Please ensure your topic can be effectively discussed with enough time for questions within that time frame.
  • YOUR TITLE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR CONTENT.
  • The title of your proposal is the first thing the committee reads when selecting a topic/speaker. Make it interesting and brief.
  • Make sure your title is related to your content. Topics that don’t match their title will be relegated to the second or third round of the selection process.

As a reminder, all proposals are reviewed and selected by a committee of volunteer professionals according to the criteria below:

  1. Originality of content (new and original proposals are prioritized over previously selected for other PIHRA events/CAHR Conference)
  2. Overall quality of content
  3. Well-defined focus, clearly listing (minimum of 3) key takeaways
  4. Practical application of material without promotion/advertising of products/services
  5. Evaluations at prior speaking engagements (if applicable)
  6. Ability to deliver an innovative, effective and stimulating presentation
  7. Willingness to provide handouts in addition to your PowerPoint presentation to ensure there are tangible/actionable items for the audience.**

*Obtaining HRCI and SHRM recertification credit is the responsibility of PIHRA. However, for us to submit your session to obtain the recertification credit, it needs to be an educational session of interest and applicability for HR professionals. It should provide educational professional development and contain a minimum of 3 key learning objectives/audience takeaways, which will usually make the program eligible for general credit.

**Handouts are provided electronically to attendees. PIHRA DOES NOT print handouts. Speaker will be responsible for printing handouts if physical copies are a part of your presentation.

Proposals are no longer being accepted for the 2020 California HR Conference.

However, you may apply to speak at our 17 PIHRA Chapters in Southern California, HR Webinars, and more.

The California HR Conference is hosted and curated by PIHRA – Professionals In Human Resources Association. PIHRA is an independent organization and is the largest affiliate of SHRM. Learn more at pihra.org.

CAHR19 Monday Recap

Wow! The first full day of the 2019 California HR Conference seemed to fly by in a flash, but there was SO MUCH going on. Monday is one of the most well-attended days, bringing a tangible presence, the culmination of thousands of HR professionals coming to one place in pursuit of one common goal. Here are the highlights of the first FULL day at #CAHR19.

First time attendee orientation

If you’ve never attended, the California HR Conference can be a lot to take in without a little guidance. Membership Director Lili Arguello leads welcoming overview of how to make the most of your time in Long Beach. She goes over who PIHRA is, how to use the CAHR19 app, which sessions are must-attend, and networking tips like inviting someone you don’t know to lunch.  The get-together concludes with speed networking to ensure no one leaves without at least one new connection.

Daniel Pink on timing

How often do you think about the impact your break schedule (if you have one) has on your performance at work? New York Times Best-selling author Daniel Pink shared eye-opening insight on how our timing in life can influence our creativing, productivity, and decision making. Over the course of a single day, our cognitive ability varies more than we realize which opens up opportunities to tackle certain tasks at times when we’re more likely to do a better job. Daniel also invited the audience to think about when they go to sleep on “free days”. Understanding whether you’re a lark (morning person), owl (night person) or third bird (right in between) can help you optimize your schedule.

Puppies

We really don’t deserve dogs. Just being around them can make your day brighter. Our Puppy Play Zone, sponsored by Payroll Link, was very well received, because just look at these furry faces!

Mega Session CHRO panel

It’s not easy creating a brand experience that attracts and retains top performers and talent, but Tina Jones, Senior Vice President of Global Human Resources at Cadence Design Systems, and Suzie Elliot, Chief Human Resources Officer at Farmer’s Group, Inc., sat down with Julian Lute, Organization Culture Consultant at Great Place to Work, to discuss creating powerful workplace cultures for all employees.

Some key takeaways include meeting your employees’ needs based on where they are in life, such as starting families and taking care of their parents. While the extravagant perks offered by Silicon Valley companies are effective for attracting talent, you shouldn’t go offering perks on a whim because it’s what every other company is doing. Better to carefully listen to employees’ needs and be proactive and transparent about their concerns.

Meet to Eat at P.F. Chang’s

The highlight of our networking opportunities was bright and full of friendly chatter. In the past three years, Meet to Eat has grown from a paper sign-up sheet based to a popular staple among attendees. There’s still time to join in on Tuesday night’s Meet to Eats happening at King’s Fish House, George’s Greek Cafe, Pier 76 Fish Grill, Gladstone’s, and PF Chang’s.

You can also join the PIHRA Young Professionals at Bo-beau Kitchen, or PIHRA South OC folks at Rock Bottom Brewery for upscale brews and pub food.

Monday was a wild success by all accounts and Tuesday is following suit. Don’t forget to connect with us on all our social accounts and check back in tomorrow for a summary of Tuesday, which includes the Ezra Ray Hart show! Follow us on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for live updates.
