DJ Noble: The Man Behind the Music

DJ Noble: The Man Behind the Music

For over 60 years, the California HR Conference has evolved continuously to develop unique experiences for HR professionals. This is the HR conference where you can access top-notch educational development – including, but not limited to California-specific trends – while having a genuinely good time. #CAHR19 proves to be no different. We’re bringing back our beloved Emcee and Director of Music, DJ Noble, to set the mood for our four days (August 25-28, 2019) in Long Beach together!

Henry is a DJ, Actor, expert music curator, and good-time-whisperer. Over our years working with DJ Noble, we’ve found it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when you’re around him. Whether you find yourself grooving to his tunes on your way to a session, or chatting with him at the music booth, he’s the kind of person who will always find a way to make you smile. (Don’t you love those people?)

We asked him a few questions to help you get to know our favorite “dancing machine” a bit better.

CAHR19: How did you get your start DJing?

DJ NOBLE: I’ve always loved music! At an early age, I began playing the violin and developed an appreciation for the way music touched people in different ways. Music brings so much joy! And when you are playing music, you are helping to create an experience for people. I actually started DJing on the advice of a friend’s recommendation. From that point, I began taking classes and learning the foundation of what it takes to DJ.

CAHR19: How do you stay inspired in your career?

DJ NOBLE: I am always inspired by what I see, feel around me! Whether this be traveling, meeting new people or watching other DJs. I am inspired by the beauty of the the world. I am always learning and looking for new ways to propel the craft and culture forward. I am an observer of life and this truly helps. I try and incorporate these items into my sets.

CAHR19: What is one tough thing that helps you grow?

DJ NOBLE: Not everyone will support you along the way. In life, there’s no shortage of doubters, haters, and pessimists. Overcoming this harsh truth is simple: don’t listen. Choose to stick with your guns, trust your instincts, and forget about people who don’t support your goals and passions.

CAHR19: What’s your favorite part of living in SoCal?

DJ NOBLE: I love all the beaches! The energy, the waves, the sand. But my favorite part of living in SoCal is the amazing scenery, and the ability to be in the mountains or travel to the beach in the same day. Where else can you be in 72 degree weather for Thanksgiving?

CAHR19: What are a couple of favorite memories from the past 4 years at the California HR Conference?

DJ NOBLE: I have soo many fond memories from the last 4 years! It’s hard to put into words. I just think back to when I first joined the conference and how much it has grown since I started. I am looking forward to what this year has in store!

CAHR19: What’s the most surprising song request you’ve gotten from a California HR Conference attendee?

DJ NOBLE: I haven’t really gotten too many far out requests. I usually end up having some good conversations about music, that leads to talking about a variety of other things. I am always open to suggestions though!

CAHR19: If the world was ending, and you could only keep 5 songs on your emergency flash drive, which songs would you pick?

DJ NOBLE: I’d pick…

(1) Stevie Wonder – As
(2) Tupac – Until The End Of Time
(3) Notorious B.I.G – Sky’s The Limit
(4) Prince – Let’s Go Crazy!
(5) Michael Jackson – Shake Your Body down to the ground

CAHR19: Do you have any parting wisdom to share with the HR community?

DJ NOBLE: You can’t always be in control of everything. Letting go is hard, especially if you’re a go-getter. But if you want to continue to grow, there are times when you need to relinquish your control on everything and let things unfold how they’re meant to be. This doesn’t mean your mentality for everything should be “wait and hope.” You can still strive for greatness, but put the work in and then let go with complete faith that the universe will make things right for you. You’ll be amazed at how well it works.

CAHR19: Thanks so much for your time, Henry! Where can we find you on the web?

DJ NOBLE: No problem! My website is dj-noble.com, and you can find me on Instagram at @hnoble5, on Twitter at @HENRYNOBLE11, and on Facebook at @DJHenryNoble. Can’t wait to see you all again this summer!

Get ready for a unique experience.

7 Reasons Why Attendees Come Back to the California HR Conference

7 Reasons Why Attendees Come Back to the California HR Conference

With the most booming job market in half a century, if we want to stay competitive we can’t afford not to invest in our professional development. These days, it’s not a question of if you’ll attend an HR conference this year – it’s which one. Here are 7 reasons why CAHR19 is the best pick – and how returning to the California HR Conference year over year makes the most of your investment.

Reason #1 – Save Time Comparing Costs

California HR Conference attendees are savvy shoppers both inside and outside of the office; they know that coming back to CAHR19 is a financial slam dunk for them and their organization because CAHR19 attendees save an average of $1068 on registration & travel fees compared to other HR conferences. That accounts for three nights at one of our partner hotels, walking distance from the Long Beach Convention Center. CAHR19 returning attendees save hours of time researching and comparing conference registration and travel fees because they’ve found the quality content they’re looking for at just the right price.

Reason #2 – Save Time Comparing Content

Another reason why you’ll save time “Conference Shopping” is that we’re as innovative as we are affordable: year over year, the California HR Conference evolves quite a lot! Between listening to attendee feedback, conducting industry research, and engaging with the HR community, we are always looking for ways to take this conference to the next level. The CAHR19 team is bringing new features, new cutting-edge session topics, new exhibitors, and new networking & entertainment to deliver the quality continuing HR education you need, and all of the extra perks & surprises you love. Plus, every year we make sure to offer more California-specific credit and content than you can find in most conferences. Whether you have operations in California, or simply want to stay ahead of the federal trends, our California track of sessions is guaranteed to help you stay on the cutting edge.

Reason #3 – Work the Schedule to Your Advantage

The California HR Conference schedule is filled to the brim with HR awesomeness. Between the concurrent sessions, the Marketplace, the Career Advancement Zone, the Solutions Stages, CAHR19 networking & entertainment, local Long Beach activities, and all of the HR peers you can get to know, there’s truly something for everyone.

It’s one thing to receive emails about what to expect, and explore the app before arriving, but it’s another thing to experience everything on site and manage your activities minute to minute. With so much going on at any given moment of any given day, returning attendees have a tremendous advantage of simply knowing the scope of available activities at CAHR19 and being better prepared to use the schedule to their advantage. Don’t worry – if it’s your first time, we’ll send you plenty of tips from past attendees!

Reason #4 – You know where all the best spots are.

Knowing where things are is such a huge help to enjoying and maximizing your conference experience, and returning attendees know the lay of the land at CAHR19! Although we’d hate for you to miss out on what’s happening around you, if you have a call that you really can’t miss, or a few emails that truly can’t wait, you’ll know which nook or cranny on the main level – or nearby cafe – will work for you to set up shop for a few minutes. Returning attendees are familiar with the lunch process, and what time to get in line to sit where they like to sit. (Spoiler alert: our buffet lunch line moves surprisingly quickly, so you don’t need to arrive at the dining area too early!) Returners also have a better sense of where to sit relative to the Main Stage for optimal listening and optimal viewing. The list goes on – but you get the point by now!

Reason #5 – You can help others who might look “lost.”

The converse of our last point is also true. Do you remember your first time at a conference? A bit of guidance from an experienced attendee can go a long way. If you’re a great navigator in new places, or have the magical ability to orient yourself anywhere with cardinal directions, those skills don’t always help you out when you’re inside a building. Returning attendees have the gift of experience that can welcome new attendees and point them in the right direction, which is an easy way to contribute and give back to the HR community.

Reason #6 – You can grow your community.

The most beautiful part of the California HR Conference is the lifelong relationships attendees develop over time. By coming back, you’ll have the chance to check in with connections you met last time as well as invest in new professional relationships, You’ll have HR buddies to sit with while you enjoy your buffet lunch, friends to pose with for pictures, and trusted contacts to share notes with from your favorite sessions and exhibitors to check out.

You can “like” or comment on posts on LinkedIn all year, but these kinds of authentic, life-giving professional relationships don’t invest in themselves. Whether you’re about to meet new dynamic peers for the first time at CAHR19, or you can’t wait to see your HR pals again this year, we recommend setting aside time to focus on those who you appreciate most in your community and in your industry. Take a friend (or a prospective friend) out to coffee on Sunday before the conference, exchange contact information with your table at a Meet To Eat, and set a reminder in your calendar to follow up. One group of folks we know who really wanted to stay connected throughout the year decided to set up their own monthly conference call just to catch up and talk shop! The sky is the limit, and the benefits to having a trusted sounding board for your career and your industry pain points are endless.

Reason #7 – You’ll grow your confidence & advance your career.

When HR practitioners gather together, something magic happens. We can more clearly see the high value of our work. We meet HR “soul sisters” (and brothers) who understand our daily life better than some of our family members. We learn more about our professional blind spots and create new goals, and we come back to the office knowing that our strengths – and our work – is celebrated. We are tired of HR being seen as a cost center rather than a strategic partner – and our session selections (coming soon!) as well as our Career Advancement Zone will empower you with the confidence and the tools you need to elevate your position in your organization. We are working to create a ripple effect throughout the business sector where HR as a profession is valued as the strategic business partner that the C-Suite needs – and that starts with a serious commitment to developing leadership skills, corporate presence, and confidence.

Attendees know that returning to CAHR19 compounds their confidence and expertise year over year – because they know they’ll access the personal and professional development that will propel them into the next phase of their career, and they enjoy earning the reputation of taking their career seriously.

Whether you’re a past attendee of the California HR Conference, or CAHR19 will be your first, we welcome you into the family, and we hope you can reap all of these benefits by coming back around! To sweeten the deal, we’re offering Early Bird pricing through May 31. Plus – group registrations of 3+ save even more. Learn more & register today!

The Top 3 Reasons Why We Love Long Beach

The Top 3 Reasons Why We Love Long Beach

From the bustling city center, to the relaxed beaches, delightfully unexpected art, shopping centers, and varied eateries, we here at CAHR19 have found so much to love about Long Beach.

Our affordable host city guarantees sunshine and good vibes, plenty of outdoor activities within walking distance – and plenty of places to find peace and quiet.

Even in late August, Long Beach’s weather is like a friend you can depend on. Do your summers tend to be humid, scorching, or insufferable? Come take a break in Long Beach, where there’s no need to hide from the heat, and the ocean breeze makes any Southern California day enjoyable.

Most of us don’t get enough Vitamin D, so be sure to schedule a block of your time in Long Beach out in the sunshine! Whether it’s paddle-boating, renting a bike for the beach path, or simply soaking up rays on the sand, you won’t regret it.

IT’S TRUE THAT LONG BEACH:

  • ☀️ Averages 345 days of sunshine each year.

  • 🎶 Hosts more Food & Music Festivals than any other city in Southern California.

  • 🚢 Has one of the world’s largest seaports (and the second-busiest container port in America), handling millions of containers each year.

  • 🏙️ Is the 36th largest city in the United States.

  • 🌴 Has over 40 attractions for visitors to enjoy, and hosts over five million tourists annually.

Although we could gush in detail about all 40+ aforementioned attractions, we know your time is limited – so we compiled what we love most about Long Beach into this brief list. Read on for the top 3 reasons why we love Long Beach!

#1 – Sublime Weather

August in Long Beach is a delight, with highs averaging 84° and lows averaging 64°. What better climate for four days of learning & connecting than a temperate, sunny day that doesn’t distract from your work – or leave you feeling sweaty 24/7?
We love that Long Beach is warm but not stifling by day, and cool but not cold at night – in other words, it’s the perfect temperature to enjoy an outdoor jacuzzi after dark. The LBC’s sprawling beaches and aesthetic urban design provide many ways to enjoy its perfect weather, which we’re excited to dive into later on.

#2 – Walkable, No-Fuss Travel

Who actually enjoys landing at an airport in a new city and taking a long, expensive taxi drive to your destination? Navigating to your hotel and to the conference should be easy – and that’s why this is the 2nd on our list of why we love Long Beach.

  • CAHR19 is a 12 minute drive from the LGB Airport. CAHR19 attendees travel to Long Beach from Coast to Coast, and even internationally. We love how close the LGB Airport is to the Convention Center – and how low-stress that airport is in general!
  • CAHR19 hotels are literally next door to the convention center. Have you ever gotten a headache trying to navigate to a conference in a new city, or failed to keep track of a complex shuttle schedule? We’re not about that life. We love waking up in our hotel, and walking 5 easy-breezy minutes to our favorite HR conference on the west coast.
  • We love how walkable downtown Long Beach is. From your hotel, you can easily access the conference, and also a host of other destinations! Walk 5-10 minutes to take a sunset stroll on the beach, or find dozens of amazing dinner options, artisan cafes for your morning espresso, and a host of fun activities (which we’ll get into next)!

#3 – Explore Where the City Meets the Sea

Once you’re out doors, there’s SO much to do! Long Beach is the quintessential California beach town because it covers all the important bases. Enjoy the beach, explore a rich culinary tradition at local restaurants, sign up for historic tours, peruse two art museums, explore new activities on the waterfront, enjoy a lively nightlife, and of course – did we mention the shopping?

Entertainment at the 2019 California HR Conference

Entertainment at the 2019 California HR Conference

Southern California is the entertainment capital of the world – and we here at the 2019 California HR Conference take this to heart. Experiencing the California difference at CAHR19 means more than:

  • ample California-specific content dissecting the nation’s most stringent employment laws and regulations.
  • earning 12.5+ California-specific recertification credits.
  • the opportunity to prepare for your California-specific certification.
  • meeting human resource leaders from some of the nation’s largest and most innovative companies.

“Experience the California Difference” also means more than adding avocados to everything, but we would if we could.  (via GIPHY)

It means all of these things – and so much more. In the immortal words of Tupac Shakur, California loves to party – and at CAHR19, we keep it rockin’. At the 2019 California HR Conference from August 25-28 in Long Beach, we’re expanding our entertainment offering more than ever to include more networking, more laughter, and more enjoyment. You work hard – and you’ll definitely be exerting energy to learn a ton during each day of CAHR19 – which is why we’re intent on giving you a great time, even between learning sessions.

From DJ Noble spinning the best tunes throughout the day, to a new Comedy show to kick off CAHR19 on Sunday night, more Meet to Eat outings, and a brand-new Music Show on Tuesday Night as the grand finale – this year’s entertainment is guaranteed to impress and delight, and most importantly, keep it rockin’ California-style.

Our faces when we heard the CAHR19 entertainment headliners. (via GIPHY)

You heard us right – we’re hosting two shows at CAHR19 this year! Our comedy night at CAHR18 was such a blast (did anyone else laugh so hard they literally cried? #guilty) that we knew we needed to bring comedy back for Sunday night in 2019. But we’re not stopping there. We’re also adding a brand-new Music Show on Tuesday night with a musical supergroup who will rock the Main Stage. Are you excited as we are? Yes? Let’s introduce you to our CAHR19 entertainment!

Director of Music & Emcee – DJ Noble

The man, the myth, the legend. Since his debut many years ago at CAHR15, DJ Noble has become the most beloved emcee and coveted DJ at the California HR Conference. He brings joy with him everywhere he goes (let’s just say, impromptu hallway dancing is a real possibility at any hour of the day) and we love that his music embodies the excitement, buzz, growth, and blossoming potential attendees experience at the conference.

While we keep the music down during concurrent sessions, DJ Noble brings the hype all the way up during his Main Stage introductions. DJ Noble curates and cultivates the musical vibe of CAHR19, and while he can keep bringing the hits (and B-sides) we love without any help from us, he’s always open for requests – so be sure to stop by the DJ booth and say hi!

When he’s not rocking the California HR Conference, DJ Noble spins all over Los Angeles County and the West Coast – but did you know Henry Noble is also an actor? Noble most recently appeared in the 2018 film The Competition. Check out his acting projects here.

Sunday Night Entertainment: Comedy Show

Sponsored by CAHR19 Comedy Show Sponsor - Amtec

Time spent laughing is (usually) not wasted. As we mentioned last year, laughing provides many valuable physiological and psychological benefits! From stress reduction to increased serotonin, to general higher quality of life, there are plenty of reasons to find time to laugh every day. For the next few months we recommend you tap into what you find hilarious – subscribe to videos of clumsy animals on YouTube, or whatever tickles your funny bone – and make sure you don’t miss the Sunday Night Comedy Show at CAHR19 featuring (drumroll, please)…

Announcing Comedian Al Madrigal

CAHR19 Entertainment: Al-Madrigal--Photo-Credit-Mandee-JohnsonGet ready to welcome Al Madrigal to the CAHR19 Main Stage! With over 18 years of experience in standup, Al Madrigal has parlayed his talents as a comedian into successful off-stage careers as an actor, correspondent, and podcaster. He’s led a star-studded career in the entertainment industry alongside some of comedy’s greatest like Martin Short. In the summer of 2016, he began production on the Jim Carrey produced Showtime series I’m Dying Up Here, where he stars alongside Melissa Leo as a series regular, and takes his comedic talents behind the camera as consulting producer. Since 2011, Madrigal has filed regular correspondent pieces for the Emmy Award-winning The Daily Show

In 2013, Madrigal starred in his first hour-long stand-up special – you may have seen it – called Why Is the Rabbit Crying on Comedy Central. He has been seen on Conan, The Tonight Show, The Late, Late Show, @Midnight and Jimmy Kimmel Live. In 2015 Madrigal released his award winning and critically acclaimed docu-comedy Half Like Me. His newest standup special, Shrimpin’ Ain’t Easy premiered May 5th, 2017 on Showtime.

As more and more people latch on to the power of a well-told story, so comedian Al Madrigal becomes more and more popular. With good reason, as The Daily Show’s “senior Latino correspondent” is perhaps the most hilarious storyteller to hit the stage since David Sedaris. His true-life tales have been featured on The Tonight Show, Conan, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Kimmel. And if that’s not enough for you to get excited to see him live at CAHR19, he was named Best Stand-Up Comedian at the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and recently taped an hour special for ABC and Univision that won the 2015 “Storyteller Award” at the Mixed Remixed Festival in Los Angeles. Now Madrigal, the man who “will make you howl until you spit expensive mineral water from your nose” (New York Post), headlines the Main Stage at CAHR19. Make plans to attend CAHR19 on Sunday night to enjoy our first entertainment show, after our afternoon learning sessions!

Get Ready to Sing, Dance and Rock Out at the Tuesday Night Music Show
